Using this data

Short version: the numbers are here to be used. Taking the whole database is a conversation, not a crime — have it with us first.

Individual measurements

A measurement is a fact. That a given tire came up 34.2mm on a 17.8mm rim isn’t ours to own, and we don’t claim it is. Quote them, screenshot them, cite them in a forum post or a video, argue with them. A link back to rubbersideup.cc is appreciated, not demanded.

The database as a whole

Gathering, checking and presenting all of it is where the actual work went. If you want a bulk copy — for research, a shop tool, an app, whatever — please email us rather than scraping. The answer is almost always yes, and you’ll get clean, structured data instead of whatever your scraper managed to parse.

What we ask in return is credit and a link, so that people who want to check a number or add one of their own can find their way back here. Without that, the data slowly decays into numbers with no provenance, which helps nobody.

Measurements from other sources

Some rows in the database weren’t measured by this community. They come from third parties who tested the tire themselves, and they carry that source in the Source column with a link to the original review.

We reproduce those with the permission of the people who measured them. That permission was given to us, for those specific measurements. It does not travel with a copy of this database.

So if you want to reuse those rows, ask them — not us. We can’t hand on a right we were lent. Currently this applies to the measurements credited to BicycleRollingResistance.com, used with their permission.

If you submit a measurement

You’re giving us permission to publish it here and to include it in the estimates. Submissions are credited to the community rather than to you by name — we don’t ask for your name, and we’d rather not have it.

Please only submit measurements you took yourself. Numbers copied from someone else’s testing need that person’s permission, and we have no way of knowing from a form field whether you have it.

No warranty

This is crowd-sourced data, reviewed by hand but not verified in a lab. Tires vary between production runs, calipers vary between people, and an estimate is an estimate. Don’t buy a frame on the strength of a number on this site without leaving yourself some clearance.
